Warmer weather is here, and Canadians are more than ready to enjoy the great outdoors.

If your summer plans include purchasing or using a recreational vehicle, the team at Roughley Insurance Brokers wants you and your vehicle to be protected in the event of a claim.

First things first… what is considered a recreational vehicle?

  • Motorhome, RV, camper, trailer
  • ATV, ORV (off-road vehicle)
  • Motorcycles
  • Personal watercraft (sea-doo, jet ski, wave runner)
  • Boats

Do you need insurance for your recreational vehicle?

Yes. Just like your personal, home and auto policies, there are coverage options to consider:

Liability coverage is included in most recreation vehicle policies. This protects you from legal responsibility if you cause damage to property or another person. If you are at fault, your liability coverage will kick in, up to the policy limit. Your insurance policy will come with a mandatory liability limit that can always be increased.

Collision coverage is optional but recommended. Collision coverage will kick in if you damage your recreational vehicle. Without collision coverage, unfortunately, you will be financially responsible for the repairs.

Comprehensive coverage is also optional but recommended as it is designed to protect your vehicle from unexpected events like fire, wind, theft and vandalism. More on that later.

Do you need insurance all year round for these types of vehicles?

Our Roughley Advisors recommend keeping the minimum comprehensive coverage on recreational vehicles all year to protect your vehicle against possible damage incurred while in storage. All insurance company policies differ, so we recommend working with your insurance broker for your specific recreational vehicle and coverage type.

When you are getting ready to bring your recreational vehicle out of storage and drive it again, it is important to let your insurance broker know 2 – 3 weeks prior to your first trip of the season to be sure that you’ll be covered. With Roughley Insurance standing by, you can enjoy your summer with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are properly protected!
