It is officially Spring! If you own your own home, or even if you are renting a property, you very likely understand that there is always work to be done…no matter the season. To help you stay on top of the ‘to-dos’, we thought you might appreciate a list of the household tasks that should be completed each Spring in order to keep your home running safely and smoothly.
- Roof: Check for any damage from snow and ice, and repair any possible areas that are a hazard for leaks. This is also a good time to check your interior ceiling and attic for signs of water damage and leaks.
- Downspouts and eavestrough: Clean leaves and other debris that may have built up since the Fall from gutters and downspouts to keep water flowing and reduce the possibility of water damage. Spring rains in cluttered gutters can lead to leaks and floods.
- Landscaping: Visually inspect trees for damage or rot, and remove any dead trees that might blow over in heavy winds or during a storm. Keep healthy trees and bushes trimmed and away from utility wires.
- Walkways and driveways: When water freezes on your driveway and walkway, this can cause damage. Repair any cracks and broken or uneven surfaces to provide a safer, level walking area.
- Check the foundation for leaks and cracks: Walk around your home to look for hairline cracks in the foundation. This is also a good opportunity to inspect for any holes that could let potential critters into your home.
- Change detector batteries: Daylight savings time is a good time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Change the air filter in your furnace: While this should be done more than once per year, Spring is a good time to maintain your filters.
- Investigate your porch and deck: Just like your concrete areas, ice and snow can damage your porch and deck. Spring is a great time to investigate if there are any boards or beams that need repairing or replacing.
- Outside water taps: After the risk of freezing has passed, you can turn your outdoor water taps on. When you do, check for signs of leaks and cracks – repair these if necessary.
- Windows and Doors: After winter, your window and door seals may need re-caulking. This will help to keep out heat and humidity in the summer and cold drafts in the winter—and save money on your utility bills all year round.
A little home maintenance in the Spring will go a long way for the seasons ahead. With the warmer weather comes an opportunity to get your home in top shape. This isn’t just for appearance either – these tasks can prevent damage and reduce your chances of a house insurance claim.
